New Writing Unit: Instructional Writing

We have begun a new unit during our writers’ workshop – Instructional Writing.  Some may call it procedural writing. Yesterday we examined the skeleton of an instructional piece of writing being What, What, How.

  • What is the goal?
  • What are the materials that are needed?
  • How do you reach the goal, How do you do it?

Today we began talking about the features of an instructional piece of writing.  We talked about writing in the second person.

Then, we used what we had learned to write together:  How To Write A Math Test

We’ll continue examining the features of instructional writing and apply our new knowledge to our writing throughout the unit!
