I Was A Pizza

Students have been learning about rhythm and beat in music as well as learning to sing in-tune. An echo song is a great tool to help us learn and practise these skills. We also talked about how the music makes us feel as well as the lyrics.  Many of us felt that this was a sad song, even though it has a lively tune.  Recording our production has helped us to feel a sense of accomplishment in music.

Visiters:  Please reply to this post and tell us how this song makes you feel.  Do you think it is a happy song or a sad song?  Perhaps you have other ideas to share with us!

A Little Number Sense!

We started today’s math lesson with a dot talk. These number talks provide students with opportunities for counting, building fluency, one-to-one correspondence, conservation of number and subitizing. We add in some oral and written language skills as we talk about and record our thinking.

I always start by showing a group of dots and ask, “How many dots do you see? How do you see them?” The conversation develops from there with the students’ answers guiding the direction.

Today we worked with 6 dots.

Next, we moved onto a new math game for our class – “Closer To The Target Number”. You can find game instructions on the math games page on this blog. Look at the top of the blog for the page.

A Quilt Project

We finally finished our warm and cool colour quilts!

The art project started off with a discussion of what warm and cool colours are and how different colours can make us feel different ways.  Then we talked about designs and how different lines and dots can go together. Then it was time to paint a warm circle and a cool circle.

Once dry, students cut the circles into quarters. Yes, we introduced the vocabulary, “half” and “quarter”. Then, students moved the pieces around and glued them to a white square.  We put the squares together, created a border and a beautiful group art project was completed!

A look Into Math This Week…

This week we are focusing on sorting!  We’ve started talking about attributes and different ways that we can sort or organize a variety of materials.  We’ve sorted by colours in different ways and today we talked about size.  Literacy skills are integrated in as well as we build our vocabulary through oral and written labels.

Parents:  You can continue the learning at home by including your child when you are organizing things at home from kitchen drawers to closets to mitten bins! Ask your child how he/she would sort a collection of items at home. Be sure to discuss their reasons for sorting!

100 Day!

We made it to the 100th day of school!  We had a grand celebration! The day started off with our calendar as we completed the tenth 10-frame and counted to 100 by tens. Then we added another stamp to our hundreds chart to see what 100 looks like counting by ones.

Then it was on to some 100 fun!

We started with a number line hunt.  Students went on a search in the classroom for numbered pegs. Once they found a peg they added it to our number line.

Students built, stacked, and created, all with 100 things!

We ended the day by counting to 10 ten times with stickers and stamps.  The end product was a funky 100 day hat!

The Pizza Parlor!

The students had a lot of fun with this project! We started out brainstorming ideas of what we would need to create a pizza parlor in our classroom.  Students came up with ideas for pizza toppings, types of pizza, restaurant names, menus, and jobs.  The construction began!

We read a lot of pizza themed books along the way. One of our favourites was, “Every night is Pizza Night!” Not only did it spark discussions about pizza, we talked about a lot of new foods too!

Once the construction was over the play began.  Students trained to be chefs, waiters, hosts, and customers.  Students learned a lot about manners, questioning, organizing, and drama skills.  A lot of fun learning was had by all!

Exploring With Ice

Outdoor learning was a lot of fun today!  It all started on Sunday afternoon when I filled 31 balloons with water. They were placed outside to freeze.  I brought them to school today and many still had not frozen solid! We talked a little bit about why that could be and concluded that sitting in the snow kept them warm.

We cut the balloons off the ice and found some interesting shapes to observe and talk about.  Then we took them to a small hill and investigated their rolling abilities.  Students talked about why some rolled better than others and used a lot of descriptive language as they talked about the shapes and force.

The fun and learning didn’t end there! the students’ imaginations kicked in and the ice balls became eagle eggs and they talked about how to care for the eggs.

Our “ice balloons” were definitely a hit!!
