Leafman Creations

This project involved reading the book “Leafman” by Lois Ehlert. We talked about the different shapes found in nature that can be used to create pictures. Then we headed outside with some empty frames, gathered materials and created pictures. The last step was to use oral language skills to talk about the pictures. We put it all together in this video!

Parents:  Head outside with your child! Notice the natural materials around you and gather a variety of items.  I wonder what your child will create?  Please send us pictures to show the class that will prompt discussion and build our oral language skills!

Literacy Centres

Each morning students come into the room and choose a literacy centre to engage in.  There are a large variety of centres for students to choose from that tap into a variety of learning styles.  Students move around centres at their own pace and according to their own preferences/interests.  Most activities are open-ended so that all students may access the learning activity as well as feel some challenge.

Here is a sampling of today’s activities.  Activities change often!

Nursery Rhymes

We are midway through our nursery rhyme unit.  We are having a lot of fun as students learn about the rhythm of language, listen for rhyming words, develop new vocabulary, sequence events and begin to attach oral language to written text.  Here are rhymes we have learned so far.

Parents:  Ask your child to recite the rhymes with you.  Have fun saying them in different voices.  Draw a picture to go with the rhyme.  Say the rhyming words and think of some more.  These can be real words or nonsense words.  The goal is to make a rhyme!

Building Adventures!

Many students have shown great interest in building projects! Up to this point, Lego has been the favourite building material. Students have built projects over a few days, wrote/drew about the project and then presented the project to the class. Pictures and recording sheets then go up onto our “Adventures with Inquiry” board.

Next, we watched a video about being an architect and talked all about that job.

Students have been invited to take on the role of an architect, plan out a building project, create a list of materials and then carry out their plan.  Many different building materials are available and students are engaging in a lot of discovery!

Leafman

Students have spent the past couple of weeks discovering leaves. They made observations, sorted, counted, painted, rubbed, questioned, read, acted out a leaf hunt, and sang. Our culminating project involved reading the book “Leafman” by Lois Ehlert. We talked about the different shapes found in nature that can be used to create pictures. Then we headed outside with some empty frames, gathered materials and created pictures. The last step was to use oral language skills to talk about the pictures. We put it all together in this video!

Enjoy!

Land Use Projects

Students worked extremely hard to complete these culminating projects.

  1. First they came up with the following inquiry questions:

a)  What is the land use?

b)  Does it meet a need or a want or both?

c)  How does it impact the environment? Positive? Negative?

d)  What can we do to lessen the negative  impacts?

2.  Then students chose topics they were interested and began to find answers with their group in both print and digital resources.  They learned how to take jot notes – a challenge for many!

3.  Once the notes were all taken it was time to move to Google Slides and create a presentation.

4.  The last step was to orally present to the class.

This project encompassed many skills from social studies, language arts, and character education. Below are the finished products!

Narrative Writing

Students have been very busy planning, drafting, revising, editing, and publishing narratives over the past couple of weeks.  Their work began with a graphic organizer to plan main events and details.  Students then moved to lined paper to start drafting.  The next step was to move to Book Creator Online to publish their books, using their writing, media, and oral literacy skills.  Students quickly realized that the writing process is not a straight line.  Their stories changed as they began to write online.  Some students simply edited, some added/deleted ideas, and some changed the story completely.

What a great discussion this prompted about what professional writers do!

Reading, Drama and Oral Responses!

We have been enjoying the many fables that we have been reading over the past couple of weeks.  Sometimes students have shared ideas, opinions and responses orally with partners and in a large group.  Sometimes students have responded to questions in writing, learning about “better answers”.

One of our favourite ways to respond to reading is using Flipgrid. Students have been learning about point of view and how to “put yourself into someone else’s shoes”. Below are links to two Flipgrids students have completed.  Ask your child to log you in so that you may enjoy all of the fantastic video responses!

Speeches 2019

This year’s speech project has come to a close!  Students worked very hard throughout the whole process.  This project involved:

  • determining a suitable topic
  • brainstorming and researching ideas/facts
  • using a graphic organizer to organize ideas into paragraphs
  • drafting
  • revising and typing on Google Docs
  • revising and editing with peers
  • revising and editing at home
  • an oral presentation

WOW! That’s quite a project for these grade 3’s!
