This was a fabulous read aloud to kick off our holiday reading responses. Students used Flipgrid to respond to the text. They focused on being sure to answer the questions that are asked and adding details to answers, explaining their thoughts.

The Global Read Aloud Begins!
Today we started another global adventure! Our class is participating in a project called, “The Global Read Aloud”. Thousands of classrooms around the world are reading the same book at the same time. This gives us something in common to connect with and learn together about.
This year we are reading the book, “A Boy Called Bat”. It is a story about a boy, a skunk, a friend and the experiences they have together.
We started the project off by talking about friends, activating prior knowledge and getting ready to make connections. We used a new tool to this class – Flipgrid! Ask your child to log into the flipgrid below with their student ID to view all of the videos we have created!
A Teddy Bear Adventure
Our class has begun a new adventure – a teddy bear adventure! This is a global project that we will be participating in all year. In the summer I met a new friend from Argentina – Ms. Kaczorkiewicz. She gave me a teddy bear from her class – Alicia Felpudita. This teddy bear would like to learn all about Canada and our Wyevale community.
In return we will be sending our teddy bear – Maple the Moose to Argentina to learn all about life in that country.
Throughout this project students will be writing from the point of view of Alicia, conducting inquiries about various countries and making comparisons to our community, interacting with students from around the world, and building global awareness.
We have set up a blog to document this project and will be adding to it weekly. You can access the blog from the page at the top of this blog titled, “A Teddy Bear Adventure”. You may access it directly by going to the following web address: maplemoose.edublogs.org
The Wind That Wanted To Rest
We continued our explorations into “compassion” today by reading the story, “The Wind That Wanted To Rest” Students responded to the story using flipgrid. Here are the students’ thoughts.
Speeches 2018
Another year of speeches has come and gone! The students worked very hard to work through the writing process (plan, draft, revise/edit, publish) to create their speeches. I am very proud of each of my students! Getting up and speaking in front of your peers is not an easy thing to do!
Congratulations students of 2018 on a job well done!!
A Wish To Be A Christmas Tree
Today we read a story about a tree who’s wish to be a Christmas Tree came true in an unexpected way. This story sparked a discuss about friendship and kindness. We shared our thoughts through Flipgrid:
Fenway and Hattie – Visualizing and Vesponding
Today we read chapter 17 of Fenway and Hattie. During this chapter we learned about a dream that Fenway has. While reading we sketched what we visualized. This a good strategy to help us understand and think about what we are reading! Then we talked about our pictures and thoughts on Flipgrid!
Talking About Ontario’s Landform Regions
We are loving Flipgrid as a way to start talking about what we know!
Fenway and Hattie – Best Friends- Our Connections
Today we are responding to “Fenway and Hattie” using Flipgrid. This is a video platform that allows us to share our ideas, use oral language skills and provide descriptive feedback to each other!
It All Begins Now!
Yesterday we began our Global Read Aloud journey!
First, we looked at the cover of the book, “Fenway and Hattie” and recorded questions about the story and then we used Flipgrid.com to record our predictions. We watched predictions made by students from other schools and responded back to some of them. We are learning how to give and receive feedback!
Today we met a partner class through a mystery skype. We learned that they are a class from Millburn New Jersey. Their school is Wyoming Elementary. Both classes did a fantastic job of asking and answering questions. The students here at Wyevale Central were so excited to meet children from another country. What a rich learning experience it will be to read and discuss the story together!
Then, we watched the book trailer. We talked about the features of this type of media and its purpose. After watching we have come to the conclusion that this will probably be a humorous story told from a dog’s point of view. We can’t wait for Monday morning!
