Do you know just how long a kilometre is?  Yes, we know that it is equal to 1000 metres but really, how long is that?  Can you visualize it?  The grade 3 students at Wyevale can!

Students were asked:  How  many times would you need to walk one of our hallways to walk a total distance of 1 km?

Students brainstormed strategies with partners and then got to work.  Students used prior knowledge of how to use a ruler, a benchmark for 1 metre, and lots of numeracy to solve the problem!

Once students measured their chosen hallway, they headed back to the classroom to do some further calculations.  They used their knowledge of doubling, adding, and organization to figure out just how many times they would need to walk the hallway to walk a full kilometre.
