Rotating Tessellations

We combined our math and visual art skills for this project!

First, students made 2 cuts and then did some taping to turn a square into an interesting shape.  We all had some fun trying to decide what the shape was!  A tiger?  A bear?  A robot? – all sorts of things!IMG_0966[1]

Then, students traced their shape. To create the tessellation they rotated the shape a quarter turn three times, tracing the shape at each turn. It seemed like magic to see the shapes fit together so well!IMG_0967[1]

The next step was to look at the colour wheel and determine what complimentary colours are.  We also discussed shades and how to mix paint to create different shades.  Students chose two complimentary colours and created a lighter shade of each.  They decided on a pattern to paint their tessellations.IMG_0968[1]

The finished product is quite magnificent to see! A wall full of colour and shape!IMG_0973[1] IMG_0974[1]
