Land Use in Rural and Urban Areas

We have looked at maps and created maps to show where in the world Wyevale is.  We’ve also discovered where some new friends are in other parts of North America.  Now it’s time to look at what we do in those places.

1.  Use the Padlet below to record your ideas about what we need to live in a community. Write as many ideas as you can!

N

Now, look at each picture slide in the Google Slide below. For each picture list as many words and phrases as you can to describe the pictures. Think about the features of the buildings, what the buildings are used for, why those buildings exist, and where you might find those buildings. Are there any other ways the land has been used other than for buildings?

Work with your partner and fill your recording sheet.

Classroom Economy

20131004-155220.jpg

The classroom economy is underway in room 210. We began by brainstorming jobs that needed to be done in our classroom. We gave them names and agreed upon job descriptions. Next we had to decide what the daily wage would be for each job. Students talked about how hard a job was and how desirable it was in order to determine the pay scale.

Students maintain a debits/credits book to keep track of how many credits they earn each day through their jobs and other ways. They also earn debits in various ways. Students must pay rent for their desks and chairs each week! They didn’t like this idea very much but now they understand the connection to real life in that we all must pay for our housing.

At the end of each week students use their math skills to add up the tallies and subtract debits from credits. They then make a trip to the bank (Mrs. Hackett) and receive their classroom cash.

The students are eagerly awaiting the first day the classroom store opens! Stay tuned!!

Gangnam style dance

Last week on tuesday and we had a dance  class and we all practised very hard! And we all had to dance to Gangnam style. We did not get to pick the song. But we only had a few days to rehearse! But on a Friday we had to dance in front of our parents. It was so hard to do in front of them because we almost forgot some moves and because we were really nervous but it was really fun.We did it very well after all! And all the parents were proud of us and we had so much fun!

This reading group read this story and then practiced reading the story as Reader’s Theatre.  At the end of the week they perform the reader’s theatre for the class and did a fabulous job!  When reading they were thinking about the Fluency Reading Tools we have been working on.  They used expression, reading smoothly and at an appropriate pace.
