Word Study Connected to Story-Telling

During Writer’s Workshop we have been working on organizing ideas and connecting them together. We’ve also been working on adding voice to our writing, using interesting words and phrases.

So today we worked collaboratively to write a story using the students’ word study words.  First students chose one of their weekly words and kept it a secret. They all joined the circle and each student had a turn to add a sentence or two to the story, being sure to include their secret word.  Students decided to include ideas from our Global Read Aloud project as well!

Here’s our first collaborative story:

Base Ten Creations

Today, the grade 3’s used some creativity to represent, compose, and decompose numbers.

Their task was to choose a number between 200 and 1000. Then create a design using base ten blocks that represent their number.  Students reviewed what they knew about numerals, place value charts, and expanded form to record their number.

Our Community Agreements

We have established 4 agreements to make our classroom community a safe, positive environment for all!

  1. Right to Pass
  2. Attentive Listening
  3. Appreciation
  4. Mutual Respect

We engaged in chart writing, drama skits, a tower of scenarios, and role-play as we explored each one and established it’s meaning. Then we moved on to an art project to symbolize our agreement to adhere by these.

First, students traced their hands and outlined with a Sharpie.

Next, they added their names, a heart, and designs to make the hands personal.

Then they used water, brushes, and markers to paint the hands.

The hands are now posted in our classroom to remind us everyday that our classroom is a
