Reading, Drama and Oral Responses!

We have been enjoying the many fables that we have been reading over the past couple of weeks.  Sometimes students have shared ideas, opinions and responses orally with partners and in a large group.  Sometimes students have responded to questions in writing, learning about “better answers”.

One of our favourite ways to respond to reading is using Flipgrid. Students have been learning about point of view and how to “put yourself into someone else’s shoes”. Below are links to two Flipgrids students have completed.  Ask your child to log you in so that you may enjoy all of the fantastic video responses!

Exploring Ontario

Our social studies unit has begun with a general look at Ontario.  As always, it’s not just Social Studies! We’re incorporating reading and writing and math skills in there too.

We started out reading a book about Ontario together.  Students used the text as well as the graphics to learn information about Ontario.  We listed the new information we learned and then shared questions we still had about Ontario.  There were lots!

Then, students worked with partners reading Just Right articles about Ontario.  This was our chance to practise Buddy Reading.  Students were given a stack of sticky notes to record new information.  They then used their sorting skills to place their stickies on the Exploring Ontario chart.  As a class we came back together and read through the stickies, made connections to each other’s findings and re-sorted some as we discovered what each of the categories really were. So many skills were packed into this lesson!  Students were engaged and enthusiastic throughout.  We’re all eager to keep exploring Ontario!

Global Read Aloud – Week 1

We have begun to read Stella Diaz Has Something To Say for our Global Read Aloud Project.  We’ve been making lots of connections and learning a bit about what life is like for someone in North America who was born in another country.  We’re beginning to build some understanding of different cultures!

Ten Birds

We read another fable today and did a little counting, too!  This wonderful book contained so much to look at and think about.  It is well worth reading!

Students had many questions as we read, “Why don’t they just fly?” Why don’t they use the bridge?”  “Look, the contraptions are making the numbers left!”  “Maybe they just wanted to challenge themselves to do something different!”

We decided that the lesson in this story is, “Labels aren’t important”.

We’d love to hear other opinions!!

You can read the book at  https://soraapp.com     Your child knows how to login in to our school account.  Our other blog visitors can find the book at your local library or book store.  It’s well worth the read!!

The Lion and the Mouse

We’ve had a great beginning to our Fables Unit!

We began the unit with some sequencing, looking at pictures and putting them in order to tell the story of The Lion and the Mouse.  Students told the story to each other orally first. Then we shared our stories in our community circle.  This provided an opportunity for some rich discussion about the sequence of events and defending our ideas!

Next, students completed a quick write activity in which they used the pictures to help them write the story.  The focus was on telling a story with a beginning, middle and end and writing complete sentences.

The next step was to read the book, “The Lion and the Mouse”.  Some students were surprised by the actual order of events and some confirmed their thinking.

Students then used Flipgrid to respond to the text and talk about the lesson in the fable.  The goal is for students to be able to state their thoughts and then justify those thoughts with evidence from the text.

Parents:  Have your child log in to the Flipgrid with their id to view all of the videos below!
