Procedural Writing – How to Have an Awesome Holiday!

This week our crew learned about writing procedures.  We read a procedural book and identified the purpose and characteristics of a procedural piece of writing. Then it was our turn! Students used SmartIdeas to organize ideas in a series of planning webs. As a group we established Success Criteria. Then students wrote complete sentences and used PowerPoint to create a presentation to publish their procedures.

Success Criteria

Creating a Brochure

Our media project for this month has been to create an informational brochure about Wyevale.  We talked about the purpose and intended audience (We want to share information about our school and community with our skyping partners from the Global Read Aloud Project.) Then we looked at a variety of brochures to identify effective conventions and techniques. Our next step was to use SmartIdeas to plan main ideas and supporting details. After that we began drafting our brochures using a template from Microsoft Publisher.  This program really helped us with the layout and design of the brochure. Lastly, we took appropriate pictures and inserted them into the brochure template.

We have sent the first completed brochure along with “M Is For Maple” picture book to Indiana.  Others will be sent later this week to Vermont and North Carolina.

Merry Christmas to our Skyping partners!

Alone

Today our class watched another public service announcement (PSA). This one was developed by The Family  Channel and the Canadian Initiative for the Prevention of Bullying, Toronto.

Watch the following Public Service Announcement and think!

1.  What is the message of this PSA?

2. Who is the intended audience? Eplain your thinking

3. How would you explain to someone the difference between telling and tattling?
